So instead of starting this off with the stories about my crazy running around the terminals, losing bags, and elephants and giraffes, I will save all that for the next post when I haven't been awake for more than thirty hours and can actually focus on what I am writing. There was one thing that happened on the way though that I managed to write in my journal so I would remember it for the blog and that is what I will fill with my first post from Africa here.
On the flight from Heathrow to Nairobi:
After watching yet another movie on my flight to Nairobi I look out the window to a scene I can only describe as a rainbow breaking through the horizon. There is the dark ground, completely void of light, and then emerges the reds, oranges, yellows, all the way up to the dark blue until it hits the night sky. It is a sight like this that reminds me how wonderful it will be back in Africa. Yes there are horizons and sunrises all around the world, but I don't know if I'll ever see any like the one I've been staring at for the past ten minutes. But beauty comes with heartbreak because I see on the map - on the tv that shows the location of the plane - that we are currently flying over Sudan with Darfur to the right of us. It is amazing to see this brilliance of light to my left, knowing the devastation that is occurring to my right. I will be on the ground in close to two hours. This has made me ready and excited to return.
Remember, Rainbows promise a better day tomorrow. Peace will cover the region in time. Looking forward to the elephants and giraffes in the next blog.
